Are Laptops and Netbooks Finally Focusing on the More Practical Features?

Typically with computers each and every year bigger and better is the theme. People are seeking the next faster processor with more video and ram to get an even faster experience. Many expect to pay a similar price to last years computers and get more speed out of them.

With laptops and netbooks speed isn't everything. In fact it's almost a problem. Even laptops that were made five years ago are fast enough to do everything that most computer users need to do on a computer. Running things like browsers, word processors, email clients, and other applications can be done quick, fast, and efficient on older computers with very little difference in speed on today's newer models.

The problem with the extra speed are two things for laptops and netbooks. The first is heat. When duel core processors and 4 gigabytes of ram were first put into laptops they were extremely hot to the touch after they had been on. Realistically to work on one of these machines all day you either need a cooling pad or some sort of external keyboard if doing long hours of writing. Another problem is battery life. The more power it takes to run the less battery life.

Recently for laptops and netbooks the focus of newer processors and internal technology has been to idea of maintaining speed while lowering wattage. Instead of getting more power out of the same wattage the goal is to sustain power with less wattage. This seems like a more practical goal for these types of machine because you can get more battery life and less heat. Solid state drives while expensive will eventually help with the heat issue as well.

It does seem a bit silly that the speeds of a portable computer must double every five years when the applications do not demand anything more today than they previously did. If someone needs a laptop for gaming or special purposes, the higher speeds are understandable, but for average day to day use today's speeds and technologies are completely fine.
