How to Make an Impact in Blackberry Application Development - Think Like a User

I Love Windows, But I Have an iPhone

There, I said it, and I feel better now.

I am a Windows guy. I always have been. I have tried to get in on the Mac craze, but every time I use a Mac I just find myself missing the features and navigation of Windows. Heck, I will even participate in the fanboy Windows/Mac flame wars out there on the behalf of Microsoft.

But when it comes to the world of mobile phones, Apple is king. After trying many different Windows Mobile phones and always ending up frustrated with the crashes, clunky interface, and all-around unresponsiveness, I bought an iPhone. I'm sorry Bill, I sold out.

Owning an iPhone however, has been a dream. Don't get me wrong, it still frustrates me how Apple's closed platform cuts me off from doing simple things like copying an mp3 file to my phone and playing it back, but it's worth it. The phone is snappy, responding almost to my thoughts before I can even translate them to a movement in my finger. The screen is beautiful, and the OS truly feels like it was designed for a mobile device, rather than designed to try and put a computer on a phone like Windows Mobile does. And I'll admit it, I love app shopping. I download apps all the time. Free apps, paid apps, any kind of app I think I can have fun with, and boy are there a lot of them.

My only major gripe with the phone is being forced to use iTunes, since I've never bothered to keep up with my id3 tagging and, even worse, since getting a new computer I can now not transfer any new content to my phone without deleting everything already on there, meaning I'll have to completely rebuild my library on my new computer first.

But, that's a small price to pay given that I spend hours on this thing when I'm out and about. I'll never again be bored in a doctor's office, or on the bus, or anywhere that I have my phone with me.

When I'm not playing with my iPhone I'm trying to warn people of how overpriced bottled water is. If you want to find cheap bottled water and save some money on something that you probably have readily available to you anyway, be sure to check out http://www.cheapbottledwater.us/.

Apple iPad Review - You Could Get a Free iPad

The Apple iPad has been out for a few months now and it's really starting to gain some popularity. At first it was thought of as just a new tech gadget that people would let collect dust after the novelty wore off. But the iPad is showing that may not be the case. Every week that passes brings out new app with a new way to utilize the iPad. The following is a quick iPad review and I'll also show you how you could get a free iPad.

One of the things that makes the iPad so interesting is that it's almost like a laptop computer. But it kind of is a cross between a Macbook and an iPhone because of the apps. There's no keyboard and there's no phone capabilities but those are the only two things that make this different from an iPhone or a Macbook. It's thin, portable, light weight and it has WiFi built in. You could bluetooth a keyboard to it if you wanted, and you could also get a Skype app for it as well. So it really has no limits and is a lot more like a Macbook and an iPhone than most people think.

Probably the most attractive thing to users is all the apps that are available. There are literally thousand upon thousand of apps available for the iPad. You can get any app that's available for the iPhone and there are a few more that are exclusive to the iPad itself. For instance, there is a new app available called MaxiVista. This is a great app because it blurs the lines of compatibility between Macs and PCs. If you have a PC and you run windows this app is compatible. What it does is it allows the user to set it up as a second computer monitor on a PC. This is great for musicians, people who work with spreadsheets or people that trade stocks online for example. The iPad is really starting to show it's potential.

Even though the iPad has only been out for a few months there's already talk of the second generation iPad. This really isn't a surprise considering that when the iPhone 3GS first came out there was talks beginning of the next iPhone right away. What is interesting is the fact that the second generation iPad could be out as early as the end of this year. There's rumors that it will be available with smaller OLED screens, which would allow it compete more with the likes of digital readers like the Amazon Kindle (even though it seems to really have dug into the Kindles market already).

The potential for the iPad is really quite amazing and I think more and more people are becoming aware of this. With all the cool apps coming out for it it really becoming quite the cool, must-have tech gadget. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the Apple iPad, especially since so much has been made of it in such little time. If you want the chance to get your hands on an iPad for free here's your opportunity. Click here for your chance to get a free iPad.

iPad 3G Sim Cards - What Are the Options?

The Apple iPad has now started shipping across the UK. The sales of this new and innovative gadget has been massive and it is proving to be one of the best selling Apple products of all time. As you may or may not know, the Apple iPad come in two versions, a 3G + WiFi enabled and a WiFi enabled. Being WiFi enabled, means that you have to be in a WiFi network in order to be able to access the internet. However, when you go out of WiFi range, you will need another method of connection - this is where 3G comes in, but you need a SIM card for this.

This is where you will need a SIM Only deal for your iPad. Take note that the special SIM Only boasts are only for the Apple iPad but not for various other Apple gadgets such as the iPod, iPhone or any other Apple machines.

There are at present in the United Kingdom have been made available on 4 main mobile networks. These include Vodafone, Orange, Three Mobile and O2. All of the networks have different ways of putting together their SIM plans and they can vary in price, data transfer limits and durations of the contracts. You can get your iPad card, on a 1 month (this is the maximum), 1 week or even 1 day. The great thing about the iPad, is that it know when you are in WiFi range. So, when the free internet access is available, it will automatically switch to this connection. As a result, you will not be eating into your data allowance.

What you decide to go for really depends upon your estimated usage amount. In the event that you find oneself using the iPad each day for pretty much everything from exploring the net to watching clips on YouTube, chatting with friends, to checking your emails, you will want a 5GB or 10GB iPad SIM Only contract to keep these needs. Should you will only use the iPad to check on e-mail and only browse the net for about 1 hour a day, the cheap 1GB more your thing. If, you are unsure how often you are likely to use it for, you might want to consider going for one of the 1 day access SIM only cards.

These iPad 3G SIM cards work in a very similar way to mobile phone SIM only cards, in terms of their contract lengths. With iPad 3G data plans you are not tied down to any long term contract and the longest period of time you plan can last is 1 month. Of course, if you like the service, you can re-new this easily, but if you are unhappy, juts ring up and cancel and find a deal on a alternative network. This is a pretty good way of doing things, as you have more freedom of both choice and on your spending.

Checkout all the latest iPad 3G Deals that are available online on the various UK networks. Additionally, you might also want to take a look at our Sim Only Contracts for mobile phones.

Where to Find the Best Refurbished Laptops For Sale

If you're looking to save a couple hundred bucks or more on a laptop then refurbished laptops for sale is just the thing you were looking for. Here in this article we will discuss some of the pros and cons of buying refurbished units as well as the best places for you to go to find the highest quality units at the lowest prices.

Pros

1.Some companies that refurbish laptops will give you the same warranty that they give their new units. Apple is a good example of this. Refurbished apple laptops for sale get a one year warranty just like their new laptops do.

2.The units have been swept clean and have had any unwanted or unneeded software removed. They are also completely free of any spyware, adware, or viruses.

3.Refurbished laptops are usually much less-expensive than newer models (sometimes as much as several hundred dollars).

4.Some companies will put a new casing on the laptop making it look just like new!

Cons

1.Laptops that have been refurbished sometimes have a much shorter lifespan than do new units.

2.Some of the refurbished units have undergone major repairs so depending on the level of expertise of the person fixing it, the laptop may not be completely repaired. This is usually not the case for larger manufacturer like Dell and Apple. But that's not to say it doesn't happen.

3.Some refurbished laptops for sale come with no warranty. Check with the supplier before you buy.

Where To Buy?

There are many sites that specialize in selling these types of laptops. Your best bet for a working unit that comes with a decent warranty is to purchase one from a manufacturer's website. The companies that sell their laptops refurbished directly from their site are: Apple, Dell, Toshiba, Sony, HP, and Lenovo.

It's best that you stick with these manufacturer's when purchasing refurbed laptops. Make sure you check with each company as they can sometimes change their warranty. Most of the sites listed above cover their refurbished laptops with the same warranty that they cover their new units. But, once again, it would be in your best interest to check. You don't want to purchase a laptop that quits working only to find out that the warranty has run out!

Ways to Extend Your Laptop's Battery Life

Though great gadgets, laptops quickly lose their charm when you've to continuously search for a power point to top up its battery. How can you extend your battery for a still longer time? We may suggest you 10 simple ways to do so.

a) Defragment your hard drive:

You should regularly defragment your hard drive, because a fast hard drive will exert less demand on your laptop hard drive. However you should make it a point to defrag it on regular power and not while it is on battery. Fragmentation is better handled on Mac operating systems so this may not be too applicable on Apple systems.

b) Make it a point to dim your laptop screen:

Most of the laptops have an inbuilt ability to dim the laptop screen. Many of the latest ones have software's and hardware combos to modify CPU/ cooling. You can chop them down to the lowest possible level which you can manage to save on battery power.

c) Remove the external devices on laptop:

The USB and WiFi have a drain on your laptop battery so you should remove them or shut them when they are not in use. You should also avoid charging devices like iPod via laptop when it is operating on battery to avoid battery discharge.

D) Try adding RAM:

This will enable you to do more of processing with your laptop memory which is fast than relying on virtual memory. Virtual memory
Usage results in hard drive use on which it is created and is less power efficient way.

E) Always keep the battery contacts clean:

Make it a point to clean battery's contacts which are of metal every couple of months with a cloth moist with some alcohol. This will make transfer of power from battery quite efficient.

F) Maintain your laptop battery:

You should not leave the charged battery dormant without usage for a long time. Make it a point to use the battery at least once in a week. Also take care so as not to discharge the Li-On battery completely.

G) Keep laptop on hibernation:

Though standby mode saves you some power but it is not that much which hibernate function saves. Hibernating a laptop will in reality save your laptop state as it is and it shuts down completely.

H) Tune up your power options:

You should go to the "power options" in your control panel and set the options so that power use is set to "max battery" for maximum power savings.

I) Avoid Multitasking:

Make it a point to do only one thing when on battery. Instead of say, working on PowerPoint, enabling your mail client to run silently in background and listening to MP3s will only drain your battery fast. Try to concentrate on just one thing.

J) Prevent the Memory Effect -

If the laptop you are using is too old, you may want to prevent the memory effect- that is you keep the laptop battery healthy by first fully charging it and then discharging the same once every month.

Li-Ion batteries which are now a days most laptops have do not suffer from such an effect.

GSM - The Most Popular Communication Protocol

GSM is the short form for Global System for Mobile Communications. It is quite popular communication protocol and used in many places around the world. Let's take a deeper look at this standard.

GSM is a standard used by cell phones for communication purposes. It is a competitor to the CDMA protocol and is also considered by many as a protocol that is superior to CDMA because of its features. This protocol is a part of emerging wireless mobile telecommunications technologies, such as Enhanced Data rate for GSM Evolution (EDGE), High-Speed Circuit-Switched Data (HSCSD), and Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS). It has more than one billion users worldwide and is currently used in more than 212 countries.

There is a difference between GSM and its predecessors. Both its signal and speech channels are in digital form and in this context it falls under the category of 2G mobile phone system.

The operational frequencies for GSM lie between 1.9 GHz and 850 MHz. This is the GSM frequency range that is used by mobile phones in the United States. In Australia, GSM used the 850MHz and in Europe the GSM range is between 900 MHz and 1.8 GHZ.

The GSM protocol makes use of SIM cards in which all personal data is stored. If you were to change your mobile phone all that is required is to change the card to make use of existing personal and contact information in the new mobile phone. This is a feature that is offered only by GSM and it is also the reason why this protocol is preferred over CDMA.

The iPhone - Packing a Punch

The iPhone is no small thing to write about. In that candy bar shaped piece of metal, is a power packed punch of technology at its best in the recent times. Incorporating seamlessly the usage of the mobile phone and the Internet, the iPhone is a rage these days.

Apple launched the world's first iPhone in 2007. Since then there have been four generations of iPhones characterized by the release of four different iPhone Operating Systems with each generation. The design and structure have remained almost the same since the first iPhone with the Virtual Keyboard and 3.5 inch liquid crystal touchscreen display. But the iPhone is ahead of any other phones due to many reasons among which the prime is supporting of third party applications. These applications are available in the AppStore or can be downloaded off the Internet.

iPhones have been slow in one area though in spite of all its advantages-quality of cameras. With the launch of the iPhone4, Apple has heard out the complaints and put in a 5 MP camera and a VGA camera on the front for face telecalling. The new iPhone overcomes its earlier display using LCD technology and introduces LED technology for display, calling it the 'Retina Display', claiming that the human retina will not be able to make out the difference between pixels on the screen. iPhones are the ultimate solution for multi tasking in a hand held devices. You can run applications keeping a browser open or play games while Safari (iPhone's native browser), iTunes run in the background.

iPhones can connect to the Internet through using WiFi, GSM,EDGE or 3G networks. The iPhone - The Cream of the Current Crop

As a user describes it, "iPhone is the dream phone". The small machine from Apple is the ultimate example of how far science has gone in terms of micro-technology. The iPhone has been through four generations now, each characterized by the release and use of a different Operating System called iPhone OS. The latest iPhone works on a 1 GHz CPU, enabling multitasking on the iPhone like never before and an array of other features.

Running on a lithium ion battery pack which run longer, the iPhones provide hassle free usage. The display uses LCD technology although the fourth generation iPhone uses LED technology described as the "Retina Display", named so because Apple claims that the retina of the human eye cannot distinguish between pixels used in this kind of technology. iPhones have hit the market and become an instant rage. Features include Internet browsing, email, Bluetooth connectivity, expandable memory, camera with autofocus and flash, gaming, in-phone audio and video editing, folders to group similar applications and most importantly, third party applications that can be downloadd for free or bought from the AppStore or the Internet. The iPhone OS supports third party functionalities like applications for reading books, watching movies, playing live guitar, or widgets about markets, latest happenings, weather and temperature etc etc.

The iPhone connects to the internet using WiFi networks, GSM, EDGE or 3G networks making it possible for one to access Internet practically anywhere-at home or on the go. It prefers WifI wherever it detects a signal so if one is using GSM, the iPhone prompts the user to switch to the WiFi network, increasing the performance of the phone altogether.

Despite many alternatives to the iPhone, it is the cream of the current crop in terms of hardware, software, finish and all the little details.

Is Apple iPad Tablet For You?

The tablet PC, portable small-screen multi-touch, like the innovative iPad Apple, are the result of developments in recent years: touch screens more efficient operating systems more friendly and intuitive, the greater autonomy of the batteries and saving resources computer, making it lighter and more compact.

The combination of these innovations in enabling a product as versatile and multimedia as iPad from Apple. However, it will not be the one. Models from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Toshiba will begin shipping soon.

iPad is available in two versions: with only Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi and 3G. Each version exists with different memory capacities (16, 32, and 64 GB).

Our analysis to iPad

iPad went on sale in the United States in early April. We tested the base model Wi-Fi 16GB. The package includes a USB adapter, a 10 watts charger, and a quick start guide.

Dimensions
iPad measuring 190 x 243 x 14 mm and weighs 688 grams. With only 688 grams, is a computer very light: less than a pound, on average, than a net book too thin. However, given that, you must handle it with your hands (without a table); 700 grams can become uncomfortable after some time.

Screen
iPad has a widescreen multi-touch, with a diagonal of 9.7 inches and a resolution of 1024x768 pixels. The fingerprints on the screen of iPad almost unnoticeable when used inside, with good lighting conditions. However, the same does not go abroad, not because of fingerprints, but for lack of contrast and, especially, for being too reflective.

Operating system and applications
iPad works with the iPhone operating system OS 3.2, an adapted version of the iPhone. Brings few premises of origin. To install new software, you must visit the App Store, at Apple's site. Many applications are paid.

The applications were the main reason for the success of the iPhone. Marked the difference between Apple's Smartphone and the competition. Only time will tell whether it will be repeated with the iPad.

In iPad, you can download programs originally designed for the iPhone, though on a smaller scale of 1:1. The image will appear with the screen size of iPhone, unless you choose to expand it, but in this case, it becomes diffuse and loses clarity.

If you already had acquired a program for the iPhone, will have to pay again to download it for iPad.

Limited Multitasking
You can switch instantly iPad, unlike other machines, which take some time to boot. Moreover, it reacts quickly to "touch" of the user and, when requested, applications open almost instantly. The ability to multitask (multitasking) the iPad is very limited. You can listen to music while writing a query mails or text, for example. However, does not use other programs at the same time. However, for many customers the lack of multitasking is not a drawback: they open multiple applications and use one at a time, using the home button. When you press this button, the application freezes. When it is open again, starts exactly where it was left.

Very basic connections
iPad has some basic buttons to adjust the volume, for example, and an input for headphones. You do not have a webcam or HDMI connector, a USB or a memory card reader. Will need to purchase some accessories to solve these problems.

Good sound
The sound is of excellent quality both with headphones and in the small speakers, despite its small size. Is not comparable to a stereo Hi-Fi, but it is better than a netbook. Bring a microphone to make voice calls over IP or voice recording. Although there is still no version of Skype for iPad, can use that is designed for the iPhone, using the microphone and speakers in the iPad. However, you can not leave Skype logged in while doing another task, because iPad can not use multiple applications simultaneously (multitasking).

Autonomy for a day's work
The battery passed with distinction the hard evidence that was submitted. We can see YouTube videos via Wi-Fi during 6 hours and 45 minutes. When playing videos downloaded and stored in internal memory, hung on for eight hours and a quarter. The test was carried out in demanding conditions, with the screen brightness and volume to maximum. Featuring high precision of the indicator of battery charge.

Main tasks
Browse the Internet - iPad has a good browser and a good screen size. However, it does not support Flash technology, which prevents come and see some sites or content.

Write IN an iPad - with the integrated keyboard on the screen is not comfortable for long texts. But you can write fairly quickly. Position the cursor in situations that require some precision, for example, to correct a word, is not easy. Still, the experience exceeded our expectations.

Reading e-books - is a better player itself. We compared with a Kindle. The latter is best in almost all respects. It has half the weight and use of electronic ink technology, which makes the viewing experience very pleasant, almost as if reading a paper document. Moreover, it can be used outdoors, even in bright sunlight (photo). Battery life is incomparable: 1 week instead of 10 hours.

If instead of e-books, you want digital editions of newspapers and magazines, iPad gains clear advantage, because the Kindle's screen is not colour.

The videos are very good in iPad, when viewed under good lighting. However, given its shape, it is necessary to hold the iPad all the time, unless you buy a base (iPad case), to put it upright. There are also some compatibility issues video formats, e.g., divx or avi.

Strengths - multimedia games: a touch interface, which fits perfectly with some types of games, the big screen, and the price. While iPad is more expensive than a DS and a PSP, games are much cheaper. In contrast, the size makes it not as transportable as a portable console.

Send emails and write documents are smaller tasks that iPad can make. But to work in day-to-day, the tablet from Apple is not ideal. Even installing office applications such as iWork, iPad can not be seen as working computer. Keynote (for presentations), Numbers (for tables) and Pages (word processing) are, for now, the only office applications for the Apple iPad.

They are very simple and intuitive and enable you to read and edit Office documents: PowerPoint, Excel, and Word. However, we discovered some compatibility problems with certain formats. Serve for some tasks, but if you want to be 100% sure that you are viewing as an Office file was created; there is no alternative but to use a PC. With Pages, you can export a file in Word format. Rather, with the Numbers and Keynote, you can not create an xls and ppt file, but only in itself or in pdf format.

Is iPad good for me?

iPad is a computer with appealing design, designed for the entertainment, to use while sitting on the couch or away from home. Lets you surf the Internet, send emails, write short texts, using social networks, see and show photos and videos, read a newspaper or magazine in digital format or play. Works well, is convenient, easily transportable, and has an intuitive.

However...
iPad can hardly be your main computer.
To read e-books, it is better to choose a player himself.
To work, the netbooks are better.
It will be expensive, given the prices in countries where it sells, but for iLovers, it is a dream comes true.

All Toshiba Satellites in the A500 model come with a 16 inch LCD, a numeric keypad, DVD optical drive, and a long-life battery.

A comparable laptop from Dell is the Inspiron 15, with a 15.6 inch display. The Inspiron 15 is part of the Inspiron series which are designed to be a good balance of features and price, similar to the Toshiba Satellites. The Inspiron 15 comes with the Intel Pentium Dual Core T4500 Processor and 4GB of DDR2 memory. The integrated video card is the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD. The hard drive is a SATA with 500GB of storage capacity. The Inspiron is a good laptop, but the A500-ST56X7 is slightly better when it comes to RAM memory. Other features are nearly identical.

Another good all around laptop in the same price range is the HP Pavilion dv5t. This laptop comes with an Intel Core i3 processor in its most basic model, but can be outfitted with with the Intel i5-430M Dual Core Processor for a price that will bring it in line with the Dell Inspiron 15 and Toshiba A500, both in cost and processing power. The display is slightly smaller, at 14.5 inches. All other features are similar.

Overall, the Inspiron and Pavilion series are good choices for the average consumer shopper, but in my opinion the Toshiba Satellites provide a little better value for the price. Toshiba Satellites get good reviews from the average consumer as well as IT professionals, and are a good choice for most computer shoppers.

Pink Laptops - Being Technologically Savvy While Being Fashion Forward

Ever since Elle Woods stepped on the big screen in Legally Blonde and showed off her pink laptop, pink laptops have been flying off the shelves. Laptops are no longer being used only to satisfy computing needs but can be a way to express oneself stylistically i.e. being technologically savvy while being fashion forward.

Legally Blonde's pink laptop computer may have started the trend and more companies have started manufacturing pink computers in various shades. From the look at me bright pinks to the more muted pinks that can be used professionally and otherwise. Other shades such as red are also being produced.

Pink has been a top color for the past decade and although most of those buying pink laptops are women of various ages, more and more men are jumping on this trend. If you are technologically savvy as well as a fashionista, a pink laptop is just what you need.

Although most will purchase a pink computer as a fashion accessory, there are other factors to consider since no two pink laptops are the same when deciding on the perfect laptop.

Points to Consider

The following are some of the points to consider before purchasing a laptop that is pink;

1. What will the primary use of the computer be? Is it going to run extensive software applications or will it be used for basic computer needs such as blogging, internet surfing, etc.

If is the reason is the latter, you may want to consider getting a netbook which is smaller and cheaper than a laptop and although it does not have the capability of a laptop, it will satisfy basic computing needs adequately.

2. One will need to determine the accessories that are needed when you purchases a pink laptop that include how to protect the laptop from scuffs and scratches. There are various accessories on the market to satisfy every need.

3. The prices of different laptops and why the prices vary.

4. The support that one can expect from the manufacturer.

5. Customer reviews and opinions.

Some of the well known and more popular manufacturers of these different colored laptops are Sony, Samsung, ASUS, HP, Dell and Toshiba. Of these the Sony Viao Netbooks are extremely popular as well as Asus which manufactures the popular Disney Netpal that is geared more toward children and is very kid friendly with easy to follow instructions.

These companies are recognizing that computers can be a fashion accessory and are making several adjustments besides the colors offered for the fashion forward crowd such as designing keyboards that can be easily used by women sporting longer fingernails. They are also including many other applications specific to laptops that are pink.

Since a lot of people require a laptop to be portable, the designs are becoming more and more sleeker and smaller which has led to mini laptops becoming just as popular as netbooks.

Reading a Newspaper on Your iPad - 6 Newspaper Apps You Should Consider

New York Times Editor's Choice (Free)

The Editor's Choice NY Times app is a shortened 8-10 article version that attempts to mimic the look and navigation of real newspapers. There's no font-resizing, zoom, or video. The App may be preferable to the webpage for many readers but those who want the full content of the NY Times should go to the website.

Wall Street Journal ($3.99 per week for content, free application)

Those who do not have a subscription to the Wall Street Journal will be annoyed by the app constantly reminding you to sign up, but subscribers will be pleasantly surprised by the lifelike feel when reading the journal on your iPad. The interface is gorgeous, but you have to get use to the navigation gestures. The iPad version of this app is completely different than the iPhone app. The WSJ app is stunning digital representation of a paper newspaper as you have full access to the articles and video. Our only negative critique is that the app could be a little bit quicker switching from one article to the other.

Associated Press (Free)

The Associated Press (AP) app does not try to mimic the layout of a newspaper. Navigation within every single section is horizontal, instead of vertical and individual stories pop over the principal interface in a modal window with arrows at the top that let you click through the previous and next content articles.

The picture and video browsers are sparse, with thumbnails laid out horizontally as if on a table, and do not let you w hat you are looking at when you browse -- you need to tap each and every image for more info. The videos look great when played back total screen, but you cannot expand the photos, which is odd. Overall, it can be a nice app with room for improvement -- we love the customization choices and offline reading capabilities, but the AP is just scratching the surface right here.

USA Today (Free)

USA Today is a no nonsense app that delivers the content of its paper. The layout can be improved and is not the most intuitive design. There's no video and you can't zoom in on post images but there is a "Day in Pictures" slideshow. The App is free and you simply cannot beat that price. In the future USA Today is planning to charge for their content much like the Wall Street Journal

Reuters (free)

The Reuters App is a very responsive app that quickly and elegantly displays quality content. Information is organized perfectly and the user interface is intuitive and easy. We would prefer swiping to go to the next article instead of the buttons, but that is really being nitpicky. Movies play well and can be made full display; the stocks viewer presents a nicely multi-touch price graph and customizable information display. In our opinion it is one of the few apps that is better than the web site.

BBC News (Free)

From an international news angle, the BBC provides content that is second to none. Its app is a great way to access this information free of charge. Our only gripe about the app is that it does not have a full-screen article view. You read articles in a two panel mode, and cannot zoom in on photos. There are great video clips and BBC Radio can be streamed live. The user interface is responsive but the gestures can take a bit of use to get use to.

Taking Care of Li-Ion Batteries For Longer Life

If you are using Lithium or Li-ion batteries as they are called in your laptops, you can do some things to prolong their life and save yourself some headaches and save money. You do not want to have to buy a replacement battery if you can help it, these are not cheap. Do what you can to take care of them and you will get better performance and longer life.

Like other types of batteries you should avoid exposing them to high heat. Keep your batteries or laptop in a cool location, which means do not leave them in a hot car. The temperatures inside a car that is closed and sitting in the sun can get pretty hot.

And do not freeze the battery, this can be just as destructive. If you think you may want to buy a spare Li-ion battery to have on hand as a back up, don't bother. They have a shelf life so if you do not use it before it ends you have wasted your money. Also check the manufacturing date on a battery you may be buying to be sure the expiration is not approaching.

Li-ion batteries are different from NiCad batteries when it comes to charging and discharging them. You should try to keep your Li-ion's charged as often as possible. Do not let them deep discharge as this will shorten their life. If you plug your laptop in for power most of the time, take your battery out and store it in a cool location.

There are many rechargeable battery types that can be reconditioned if they go bad. Li-ion batteries generally can not be reconditioned because of their construction. NiCd's and even car batteries are a couple types that can be done. To discover more information about reconditioning batteries check out a Restore Rechargeable Batteries.

As you may have noticed, netbooks are all the rage nowadays thanks to their portability and affordability. Those of you who had the pleasure of using and owning a netbook would have quickly noticed that they are meant for performing very light computing tasks like surfing the web and checking emails.

Due to certain compromises to maintain a small price and a low price point, netbooks are indeed less powerful and because of that, not as practical as laptops when it comes to performing computing tasks. Thanks to its slightly larger size, it has a larger screen and a more powerful set of specs. The screen is a 11.6-inch HD display and it comes with an AMD Athlon II Neo processor, 250GB of storage and 2 GB of DDR3 RAM.
