iPad Screen Protector - How to Prevent Screen Damage

Any user that is new to the Apple touch screen experience provided on a majority of their current devices many wonder about what they need to protect their iPad. They take to time to figure out if they need a case or if they should purchase iPad screen protectors because they would like to spend as little as possible on the device.

However, if you have not used a touchscreen device in the past then you should save the time and effort of research because you need to purchase a protector. If you don't invest in an iPad screen protector then you put the device at risk of getting scratched or pixelated. The screen of the iPad is made of glass and this means that it is very possible to scratch the very large screen while you are using the device as normal. Tapping the device with a finger can cause this and when it does happen it will forever change the look of the device.

If this is something that you hope to avoid then you will need to purchase a screen protector for iPad and apply it to the iPad as quick as possible. This is a thin sheet of film that is similar to lamination. It is placed on the front of the device and all the air bubbles are removed from the surface before setting it down.

Having this on the device will prevent it from getting scratched, dirty or suffering dead pixels in many cases. You can purchase these from any company that makes iPad accessories. Speck offers one of the most popular versions but many retailers offer them at a discount. They are also available in packs with multiple protectors and this will help you to ensure accurate fit on the large iPad screen.r

Lead an Easy Lifestyle With the Help of Your iPhone

Those days of driving around looking for a place to eat is completely over, now if you own an iPhone you can literally find and decide on any restaurant in your vicinity with the help of some simple applications meant for your phone only. This great feature is possible because all iPhones are location aware which means that the phone knows exactly where the phone is, therefore looking for a restaurant on the iPhone is as good as any other local search.

In fact, there is also a free application that is installed on all iPhones and this is for free by the way- this is known as UrbanSpoon. You literally have to do nothing to find a restaurant to eat at other than to simple shake your phone. Once you shake it, the iPhone will give you a choice of a nearby local restaurant- and this is going to be shown to you in the "slot machine" interface of the phone. However, if you are not satisfied with the restaurant that the phone picks for you, all you have to do is shake it again. As simple as that!

Other than that if you are used to taking the help of the popular restaurant reviews website Yelp, then you can download their application on your iPhone and use that to find restaurants of your choice in the vicinity.

There is another popular application that you can download as well, this one is known as WhereTo, but this application is not free although it isn't expensive either. But with this application it makes things even simpler, you just have to point the phone in a direction of your choice and the application will give you a list of hospitals and auto repair places and restaurants and shopping malls and pubs etc.

For more information, visit wrappz.com. They offer a variety of phone skins, including the new iPhone Skins. For more skins such as iPhone Skins, visit the site above.

How to Make Your Netbook Easier to Use

If you have a netbook, you probably would like the device to be easy to use. For the most part these devices are simple but they do have their drawbacks as well. Find out some simple changes that you can make that will help make your netbook a bit easier to use.

Keep the system running fat. You need to optimize the settings making sure that it's set up best for your preferred operating system so that things will be smooth. Get a free virus scanner and spyware scanner on the machine so that you can get rid of malicious files as quick as possible so they won't slow down or ruin your netbook.

Get a bigger battery that lasts all day. There are many netbook batteries that are fairly cheap that will give you six or even nine hours of battery life. This way you can leave the power cord at home and just enjoy your netbook all day without the extra weight.

Add more RAM to your netbook. This is the cheapest upgrade that you can make to your computer. It will make everything you do run faster, give you better battery life, and help everything run much more smoothly.

Connect a keyboard, mouse, and monitor to your netbook if you are going to be working with the machine for long hours at home. This makes it feel like it's a desktop computer which will be more comfortable for you to use.

When you have applications open like your browser, try to thin out the vertical space that this type of application takes up. Remove things like the extra toolbars you don't need to maximize the viewing space.

Many find that keeping an external mouse with the netbook makes it easier to use. Many of the touch pads are just far too small to be useful for many. A small external wireless mouse can make a huge difference in comfort and ease of use.

Free Laptop - Is This for Real?

Let's talk brass tacks here when it comes to the hype surrounding a free laptop. What is the deal with all these offers for a free laptop? It seems everywhere you look on the Internet we are being offered free laptops. Is this for real? Or is it too good to be true?

Well, whenever you hear the word "free" a red flag should automatically go up in your mind. If it doesn't, it should. Whether it's a free laptop or a free ice cream cone, free is a dangerous word. If businesses went around giving stuff away for free, they would never be in business for very long. So it just begs the question: How can people be giving away free laptops?

Well, there are four things of which you should be aware when you see an offer for a laptop for free:

First of all, it is indeed possible to get a laptop for free. It is. That's a fact.

Second, it behooves everyone to do their research and be careful about which of these free laptop offers they bite on. Getting a laptop for free is not impossible, but you need to know where to look and who you can trust. Watch out for scams. Be smart.

Third, determine exactly what you want. There are many models and types of free laptops on the market, so you just need to spend a few hours on the Internet figuring out what you would like. This is time consuming, but also very important. Free laptops include everything from DVRs, USB ports, headphones and microphone jacks, and web cams. It all just depends what you want.

Fourth, the catch to some of these free laptops is that you usually have to sign up for several other services in order to get your free laptop. For example, the price of the laptop you are getting is usually paid by the person who is trying to recruit you for these other services.

Let's say, for example, that you own a timeshare resort. You may offer one of your owners $1000 if they refer three other people to your timeshare resort. As a timeshare resort, potential owners are very, very valuable. A resort may spend between $300-$500 in marketing alone just to get an interested buying to come look at the resort. So it is certainly worth your money to pay an existing owner $1000 to get three of their friends to come see the timeshare resort. Even if only one of those people ends up buying a timeshare from you, it will pay for itself in no time at all. Make sense?

Anyway, that is kind of how the laptop offers work. If someone is willing to give you a laptop for free, they are also trying to refer you for some other services. So the person giving away the free laptop gets you to sign up for several other trial offers or subscriptions. This person then gets about $1000 commission, and they turn around and buy you a $500 laptop. It is legitimate, but you just need to be careful and make sure that you keep track of all these trial subscriptions and that you cancel them after the trail period. If you don't cancel them, you will get enrolled automatically. And that's when it gets expensive. The laptop for free becomes less and less free the longer you keep your subscriptions and memberships active.

The Apple iPad and Beyond

As I sit here typing this article on my first generation iteration of the new Apple iPad, I can't help but think of all the negativity I've heard and read about the device. The iPad is actually a great tool, and it fills a void that many won't recognize until they've actually owned and used one. I believe a lot of the bad vibes about the device are trickled down from the bad feelings they have about Steve Jobs and Apple's marketing scheme as a whole.

First of all, it is an expensive unit, no doubt. Starting at $500 for the 16g model, it's essentially a giant iPod touch. You could buy a laptop for that price nowadays, and that's a main argument against purchasing an iPad. Well, the iPad is not meant to replace a computer, in fact, it needs one to sync with in order upload files anyway. iPads are for consumers who already own a laptop or desktop, so it's essentially not competing with cheap laptops. That said, for $500 you will buy a junky cheap laptop; the iPad is a high grade, top notch quality device.

The iPad doesn't do everything I want it to... no, it does not. Again, it's not meant to replace a full computer. With predictions of cloud computing being predominant in the future, having a slate computer, such as the iPad is a logical step in that direction. I use the iPad for light duty work, such as writing these blog articles. I use it for multimedia such as movies, internet/YouTube and playing unique games. The intuitive internet browsing experience is unmatched by anything a normal PC can compete with. The iPod audio and iBooks app make it a fantastic device. The iPad is super portable with great battery life. I easily carry it from room to room, out onto the deck, or away for the weekend, without giving much thought to battery levels or transport burdens. Let me tell you this is far easier to travel with than my old laptop, with its surprisingly heavy shoulder bag, and measly battery life. For real work at home here, I still go for my desktop or laptop, but I'd say I now spend over 50% of my "computer time" on the iPad. I can thumb type very quickly when holding the device in portrait mode. The "novelty" does not appear to be wearing off. In fact, I'm considering getting rid of my laptop completely.

The predictions I've read, is that in the future, most people will only have a desktop, and a slate computer (and a smartphone). This means that laptops could be largely obsolete. As it stands now, the only purpose I see for a real "laptop" is if you need to constantly take it back and forth to school/work and home. Most laptops today seem to be desktop replacements anyway. They're large and heavy and seem to just stay put in most homes. From a value standpoint, a desktop computer would be a better purchase, and you would get a much bigger screen to boot. With "cloud computing" coming, the future desktop PC will just be a small box with a minimum of power and storage. It will basically be a workstation, from which you could access all your files, which are stored online. Your virtual "desktop" will be identical, whether you use the computer at work, school or home. A current example of cloud computing is with webmail. Our email used to be downloaded directly to our personal computer, and that rendered it inaccessible from any other machine. Now, for most of us, our email is stored online through webmail clients such as Gmail or Hotmail, and can be identically accessed anywhere in the world. So I ask, why would we need "portable" laptops? The fact that most slate computers will be convertible into a "laptop" anyway, seals the case, IMO.

For some, having a smartphone, such as the iPhone, is the only portable device they need to go along with their normal computer. It's much smaller and more portable than an iPad, and not all iPad's have 3g wireless anyway. For me the screen size of a smart phone is much too small to be practically usable. I don't really need to surf the web everywhere I go, and the contract costs are astronomical. A semi-smart phone with basic email access is all I am willing to pay for. To that end, I want the smallest and lightest phone I can fit in my pocket, even the iPhone is too big to always carry around, IMO. I don't have a purse.

The large complaint about Apple's methodology is that they release a device which is lacking in features and functionality. They market it up as a cutting edge dream machine, and get it out there before any competitors can release their competing products. Everyone and their dog goes out and pays a premium price for the units, and then complains that it can't do this or that. Within a year, Apple releases the second generation, which addresses the shortcomings of the first release, and everyone scrambles to buy the product, again. They effectively create a market for their second release by releasing an "incomplete" first generation. An example of this is no webcam on this first iPad...but, they have the technology...?

The other big complaint is the closed system Apple operates under, to gain profit. In the US, iPhone users and 3GS iPad users are tied into AT&T, a company which many dislike. These devices are also tied into iTunes, and now iBooks, which makes it easy to buy from Apple and surprising annoying to use files from elsewhere. All apps need to be purchased through, and approved by Apple. It's not inconceivable, however, that apple may sell the iPads, etc. At a loss, and then make their money on the apps, music, and contracts. That's how the video game console market works.

Competition is coming, though. At my last check there are approximately 10 competing slates due for release within a year. These slates will have screen sizes ranging from 5" to 12" and are powered with a host of chips including Nvidia's Tegra 2 and Intel's Atom. The popular operating systems named are Google's Android and Windows Embedded 7. If you'd like a slate that has more user functionality and control, it may be worth the wait. The iPad is more geared towards users that like everything seamlessly done for them, which has been Apple's methodology. That said, there is some user control, such as having the ability to customize the background wallpaper with an image of your choice, and there are so many apps available that you are bound to find a 'work around' for other shortcomings. No, the iPad doesn't do everything I want it to (like run flash websites), but it does enough, and it's been one of my best purchases ever.

Should You Buy a New Laptop?

If your current laptop is running really slowly it might be time for you to buy a new one. But first, before you go out and buy a new laptop you can try a few things yourself to speed it up (these are also applicable to desktop computers).

1. Delete any unused programs. If you have programs on your computer that you're not using then get rid of them.
2. If that is not enough and you're computer isn't older than four-years old then try adding a GB of memory. This is a fairly cheap way of upgrading your laptop.
3. If your hard drive is running out of space then delete everything that you don't need or want. If you have pictures, video, or music then put it all on disc and then delete it from your hard drive.
4. Add an external hard drive to your laptop. This is probably the easiest way to upgrade your computer.
5. Once you have done all of this run the Disk Defragmenter that should be in your Windows bundle. When you run the Disk Defragmenter it helps your hard drive find files a lot faster than before.

If these steps don't work (and your computer is older than 4 years) then you may need to replace it. If you need to replace it make sure you wipe the hard drive and recycle it. You can find software and programs online that will wipe all the information off of your computer for you (Apple has this feature built in).

Should You Buy a Windows or Apple laptop?

If you find you need to purchase a new laptop there are really only two options for you when it comes to what type of operating system you should run with. The two options are discussed below.

The latest version of Windows is Windows 7. You can find versions that range in price from $110 to $230. These are off the shelf prices but if you bought a computer that features Windows Vista after June, 2009 then you may be eligible for a free upgrade. If you're a college student then you can purchase an upgrade for only thirty-bucks.

The best alternative to Windows 7 is an Apple laptop that's running a Mac OS X operating system. An Apple laptop can run Windows 7 but you have to install it yourself. Apple users generally do not like to run Windows (and vice versa). The latest version of the Apple operating system is Snow Leopard. People who currently are using an Apple laptop can upgrade to the new Snow Leopard system for only $30. If you bought a new Apple computer after June of 2009 then you can purchase an upgrade to Snow Leopard for only ten bucks.

Protecting Your School With a Laptop Cart

Security in schools is a big deal. Schools these days have multiple security policies in place to protect not only the students but also the computer environments. Inevitably school kids are going to play around with computer equipment and things will go wrong. Vandalism and destruction of property that comes from not only inside the classroom but also after the lights go out at the end of the day is something that is of utmost important for the safety and well-being of a school.

There are of course a number of ways to combat this ever-growing problem; one good way to do this is to introduce laptop carts into your school.

Key Points

It is important to know that having these laptop carts present in your school can prevent theft and can also prevent damage to any computer environment that your school children may be using.

There are many different types of laptop carts so you are more than likely to find the cart that will suit your school and environment. This is an extremely important point as the laptop cart you choose must fit the needs of the school.

You don't need to worry about security with them. They are made of steel and are designed to keep your laptops safe and withstand all kinds of abuse from outside threats.

Not only do they act as storage, they also act as a mobile charging unit for a host of peripherals. This means that you can set your laptops to charge every night ready for the next day. Bear in mind though, that charging units will cost extra so it is vital that you identify whether your school needs them.

A lot of schools are now adopting netbooks as their primary classroom computers. They are doing this as netbooks are smaller, more portable and cost less than laptops. If your school has adopted netbooks then you will be able to find special netbook lockers that will be able to hold more than a regular laptop cart.

Security for your computer equipment is essential and any measures you can take to prevent theft and/or vandalism should be looked at carefully. More and more schools are identifying laptop carts as their weapon of choice to keep them safe.

Michael writes about the benefits a Laptop Cart can have in schools.

Toshiba Laptop Computers Stump the Competition

Toshiba, a Japanese company, known for their superior electronics and laptop computers have been on the cutting edge of technology for over three decades. Best known for its computer and audio/video equipment, Toshiba has stumped the competition since they produced their first laptop in 1985.

Possibly some of Toshiba's success can be attributed to their participation in the semi-conductor business in which they rose to the number two company and are still in the top five today. That experience has undoubtedly given them a unique perspective of the market. Other laptop manufactures always seem to be one step behind. As they are introducing their prototypes, Toshiba is yet again, introducing another breakthrough in technology that often becomes the rule not the exception into laptop design and function.

Take the Satellite series for instance. This laptop has been on the shelves for over a decade and remains to be one of the best selling notebooks to date. The Satellite continues to be a hugely sought after laptop computer with affordable pricing yet with a plethora of options and innovation included. Most good laptops are both reliable and lightweight as are the Toshiba series. Yet, what sets these computers apart is the speed, price point, and exceptional user friendly innovation. They truly look to the consumer first before designing amongst their IT experts. They realize that most of us are looking for a few simple traits in a computer. We are looking for a computer that thinks like we do, not like an IT engineer, and the Satellite series offers such a notebook.

With the infusion of the gaming community,Toshiba began offering a multimedia model geared towards the younger generations such as high school and college students, called Qosmio. Although pricey at best, this series is loaded with the latest technology, advanced graphics and includes built in television tuning with magnificent display capabilities. And talk about speed. You will want for nothing with this notebook. They are designed with the gamer in mind as well as those in the audio and video editing fields.

Intuitive laptops such as the Toshiba notebooks are imperative in this day and age but so is reliability. One of the greatest innovations that was installed was there sensors that can detect if your laptop is falling. When these sensors are activated your laptop actually can lock down the hard drive saving you valuable time, money and heartache. In fact, Toshiba was recently given the highest reliability rate out of the top five leading notebook manufactures.

With this type of forethought and innovation, you can be assured that a purchase of a new or used Toshiba computer is a wise decision. No other company has had the sustainability nor the customer longevity like the Toshiba laptop computer has possessed year after year.

What Are Some Disadvantages of Android Netbook?

Android has become a very popular mobile phone operating system. Many of 2010's best selling phones now are on this platform. It's open source meaning that any company can take this and put it onto their hardware. There are many computer companies thinking of taking this operating system and using it on lower power netbooks. While this does have some advantages, there are some disadvantages to running Android on your netbook.

First of all, these are going to be fairly slow. The hardware that is designed for Android netbooks tend to be less powerful than a normal netbook but a bit faster than a smart phone. You should not expect to have an excess of speed as you might be used to on other netbooks build on different operating systems.

You are going to have to wait for functions to come to Android. While Android is doing great as a mobile phone, there are just things that aren't on this platform for computer users yet. With Windows or other forms of Linux, these functions already exist. With your Android netbook, you will still have to wait for things to be developed.

The hardware is extremely specialized on Android netbooks. It runs an architecture that is a bit different than what many other computers are running. This means that you might have issues trying to install other operating systems on this device if you want more than just Android.

Windows programs are something that you are not going to be able to run. Other version of Linux at least have WineHQ that will run some Windows programs on your devices.

You won't be able to do as much since there are less applications available compared to Windows or other versions of Linux. This gives you less flexibility with an Android netbook compared to what is already available.

Other versions of Linux netbooks have already have many of the features that Android is still hoping to develop. You can have it all now or wait for this platform.

Android Drive

I love it when people don't get it - it means the market is ready to shift.

Last week the geeks at Google released a gizmo that lets average people create Android apps via a brain-dead-simple user interface. The reaction from the technical community involved hysterical laughter, deriding the tool and the alleged limitation of applications it could craft. Uniformly they snickered noting that while Apple's App Store is loaded with professionally honed software downloads, Google was encouraging point-and-meow apps. They used the news to lambaste Google's Nexus One handset, which had a short life before cellular carriers started selling their own Android handies.

The technical community doesn't get it, which means the market is about to shift.

Nexus One and the Android App Inventor served similar purposes, namely market seeding. Android was a relatively new entrant into the handset OS market, and going up against Apple, Microsoft, RIMM, Symbian and other established players. Adopting Android presented a risk to everyone - handset makers, software developers, carriers and consumers. In order to reduce risk and encourage experimental adoption, Google needed to get a handset into people's hands. Thus they conscripted HTC to build One that showcased Android (and HTC was smart to exploit the opportunity to showcase their design and manufacturing capabilities). This assured that developers, early adopters, carriers, analysts, reporters and even competitors saw what Android could do and in turn created both desire and FUD in the market.

Google used Nexus to move Android past a market hurdle.

Apple's most significant remaining advantage in the market is its app store (face it, Android, Symbian^3, WebOS and maybe even Windows 7 mobile-whatever-they-are-calling-it-this-week have similar/identical/good-enough capabilities at the OS level). Apple app richness is a market hurdle. To get past that hurdle requires people believing that Android is a good environment for which to build apps (and given how well the durn things are selling in the East, Asian Android apps is a redundant phrase). Android App Inventor is a simple tool for creating apps, and is the Nexus One of application development tools - it exists to reduce risk of discovery, and as a side effect, maybe cause users to instigate the next great idea for a mobile application.

Misreading the intent of an event is an indicator of a market shift because those slinging misguided rhetorical missiles are those of inert thinking. When conventional viewpoints prevail, unconventional thinking succeeds. Google recognizes the app market hurdle while various tech industry pundits don't. "The goal is to enable people to become creators, not just consumers, in this mobile world," was how the Android App Inventor project leader phrased it. "I think Google's App Inventor tool that enables anyone to program an Android app could be profound," opined one wag.

The unconventional thinking here is the same that drove social networks. People, the unruly mob that they are, have more net ideas than all the professional developers combined and raised several orders of magnitude, then multiplied by the number of interns politicians sleep with (that last item being a truly staggering sum). Any of these end users may never perfect an app, but they will invent more apps that Steve Jobs has in his digital wet dreams. Android App Inventor unleashes imaginations.

The best parallel I can recall was Borland. In the early days of MS-DOS, a compiler cost a couple of thousand 1980's dollars. Borland put Turbo Pascal onto the market for $49 and every two-bit hack started writing applications. Borland and shareware marketplaces, not Microsoft, made MS-DOS successful. Rough hacks created by hobbyists were hijacked and converted into mainstream applications. Android App Inventor follows the same path, taking it one step further by putting programmer power into the hands of every man, woman, child and highly functioning dog (though congressmen are still not yet advanced enough).

Android App Inventor is a game changer. The pundits just don't understand the game.

Are Laptops and Netbooks Finally Focusing on the More Practical Features?

Typically with computers each and every year bigger and better is the theme. People are seeking the next faster processor with more video and ram to get an even faster experience. Many expect to pay a similar price to last years computers and get more speed out of them.

With laptops and netbooks speed isn't everything. In fact it's almost a problem. Even laptops that were made five years ago are fast enough to do everything that most computer users need to do on a computer. Running things like browsers, word processors, email clients, and other applications can be done quick, fast, and efficient on older computers with very little difference in speed on today's newer models.

The problem with the extra speed are two things for laptops and netbooks. The first is heat. When duel core processors and 4 gigabytes of ram were first put into laptops they were extremely hot to the touch after they had been on. Realistically to work on one of these machines all day you either need a cooling pad or some sort of external keyboard if doing long hours of writing. Another problem is battery life. The more power it takes to run the less battery life.

Recently for laptops and netbooks the focus of newer processors and internal technology has been to idea of maintaining speed while lowering wattage. Instead of getting more power out of the same wattage the goal is to sustain power with less wattage. This seems like a more practical goal for these types of machine because you can get more battery life and less heat. Solid state drives while expensive will eventually help with the heat issue as well.

It does seem a bit silly that the speeds of a portable computer must double every five years when the applications do not demand anything more today than they previously did. If someone needs a laptop for gaming or special purposes, the higher speeds are understandable, but for average day to day use today's speeds and technologies are completely fine.

Pack Your PC in 3 Easy Steps

Have you ever imagined packing up your PC to take to a friend's house but just didn't know where to start? A PC has a few basic components that are required to make it work where ever it goes but knowing which ones to take and how to security pack them isn't always easy to figure out.

The Basic Components of a PC

The computer itself sometimes called the CPU, the box, or the tower. This is usually the piece of hardware most everything else is plugged into. It usually sits under or next to your desk. The monitor. This is the display. The screen you are reading this off of is the display. The keyboard. The device you type things on. The mouse. This is what controls the arrow on the screen. For a computer to work, these are the basic parts you need. If you want sound you'll need the speakers as well. Some come attached to the monitor, others are free standing.

The first thing you want to do is make sure you have a bag for the cables. A plastic grocery bag will work fine but a larger bag that can hold your keyboard will make things easier. First we start by disconnecting all the cables to the devices we know are going. Unplug your keyboard if it's plugged in. If it is a wireless keyboard unplug the receiver and pack it in the bag. If you can fit the keyboard into the bag, pack that at the bottom. Next unplug the mouse and place it in the bag. If it is wireless pack up the receiver (it may be the same receiver as the keyboard) and the mouse. Don't forget to toss in your mouse pad.

Now we work on the monitor. There is a power cable for the monitor. Unplug this cable and place it in the bag. Next is the video cable. Again, unplug it and place it into the bag. If you have additional cables they me be for other devices that connect to the monitor such as the speaker cable to the PC. Pack that cable as well. Once the monitor has no more cables, remove it and place it safely to the side.

The last part we need to clear of cables is the computer itself. If you have a simple setup, the PC should only have a power cable and maybe a network cable plugged into it. Pack the power cable and network cable just in case. After that the PC should have no more cables on it. If it does, trace them to their device and decide if you need that device.

The biggest mistakes made when moving computers is leaving a cable behind. I have left one of every cable behind when I have moved my PC somewhere else and have created this mental checklist to ensure I get everything. Power cables are the most common as many people unplug their monitors and computers and move them before unplugging the power cable from the wall. You forget it's there and forget it when you leave. Network cables are the next cables I typically forget. Again, unplug it and forget about it entirely. Sometimes I forget I'm moving from a wired network to a wireless and forget my wireless adaptor. Remember these basic parts and you'll be sure to bring everything you need with you.

Promising Options in Netbook Operating Systems

Netbooks are small lightweight notebook computers designed mainly for the web. Some computer enthusiasts claim, that early portable small screen computers, were early netbook versions. But the netbook didn't really start to catch on until ASUS launched the Eee PC in the fall of 2007.

Early netbooks were Linux based. Because Linux is a lightweight operating system and can run on smaller less powerful systems it was the perfect choice. Using this free open-source operating system, these netbooks were reliable, boot quickly, don't crash, and have tons of free software available.

You will find many different Linux based operating systems on netbooks today. But, there are problems with the Linux based systems. Most users are used to windows operating systems. Plus they would like the ability to run their Windows programs and easily hook-up their cameras and other peripherals.

Vista is too resource intensive for lightweight computing so current Windows netbooks will run on a light weight version of Windows XP. Which does make them easy to use since most computer users of the last decade have come in contact with XP at one time or another.

The demand for lightweight portable computing seems to be increasing and netbook manufactures don't want to disappoint. The market for a powerful OS that is still lightweight is full of new possibilities.

Rumor has it that Microsoft is planning a Windows 7 netbook edition. Which would give consumers all of the familiarity and ease of use of a Windows system. But still provide a fast lightweight OS.

Intel has created a new faster chip designed specifically for netbooks. They have also been experimenting with a new netbook OS. Intel Moblin is based on Fedora, a Linux distribution. Moblin is designed to work with the Atom processor offering better power consumption and speedier boot times.

Jolicloud is a new OS in the works designed specifically for netbooks. It's an Internet operating system that is supposed to combine open source and open web. The main resources are on the Internet. So the computing power required is not as much making this the perfect netbook OS. It offers lightweight cloud computing with an intuitive iPhone like interface.

Another option in the works is the Google Chrome OS designed for netbooks. The look and feel is similar to the Chrome browser and is designed for fast lightweight computing. This option should be available next year.

The netbook market is continuing to grow and it will take some time to get all of the bugs out. But with these new OS options on the horizons netbooks are about to become mainstream.

Find out more about netbook operating systems and netbooks such as the Lenovo Ideapad S10 at our etextbook site.

Packing Your PC For Travel

If you are like me, you bring your computer with you on trips and vacations. Sometimes it's hard to figure out where to place your PC in your car. You have either a CRT monitor that takes up almost 2 cubic feet or a delicate LCD monitor. Combine this with a PC tower that can be larger than a carry-on bag and you can see your trunk space shrink quickly. Not only is there limited space for these devices but they have to be handled gently or you may break them.

Most computer equipment is sturdy but parts can be easily broken. A CRT monitor for instance is heavy and can be moved into place but if the screen touches something sharp or hard, it can get a scratch. For a monitor try to reserve a seat in the car for it. If there is going to be a spare seat place the monitor, CRT or LCD with the screen facing the seat and a towel or blanket on the screen itself. Pull the seat belt all the way out and engage the child locking feature and snap it in place. Tighten the seat belt until it is firm but not super tight. You only want the seat belt to keep it in place when you hit the brakes.

If this is not an option, you can place it in the trunk. For a large CRT cover the screen with a blanket and then face it against the back of the truck and load larger items around it to keep it in place. If it is an LCD pack the trunk before placing it in and keep a place big enough to lay it flat. Use a thick blanket or pillow to protect the screen placing it in the reserved place and then the monitor face down on top of that. It will slide so packing around it to keep it in place will be needed.

The computer itself is a large case but still requires some delicacy. Most cases are not built to withstand shoving and cramming into a trunk and might bend or break if you do so. The biggest killers of PCs are bumps because a typical motherboard inside the PC is mounted on the side of a PC, not the bottom. A big enough bounce can cause larger components to bounce up and down breaking the sockets they sit in. The best way to avoid this is to look at the back of the PC where the cables attach to it. One side of the PC will have all the plugs against it. If you are looking directly at the back, this side is typically the left side. That side is where the motherboard is located and should be laying flat on the floor of your trunk. This will ensure the bumps have little effect on the components inside.

You probably have a bag filled with your cables, keyboard and mouse. You can stash the bag anywhere this is room but don't try to cram it. A keyboard is just made of plastic and can snap if you try forcing it into a spot it won't fit. Cables can also be folded too tightly causing the wires inside to break and ruining your cable.

Follow these suggestions to help move your computer safely and with the least amount of damage. Some components of a PC are delicate and can be scratched or scared while other components can move in their places casing unseen damage.

iPad Repair - Finding the Best Online Repair Companies

The Apple iPad is all the rage now in the tech community, with millions of units having been ordered in the last few months. And that means that inevitably some of these tablet computers will suffer from accidental damages and breakages. So are there options for iPad repair, or does it mean that you have to just purchase a new on to replace the one you broke?

Fortunately, there are already several online companies that are trained and licensed to offer iPad repair. For a much lower price than it would cost you to buy a new iPad, you can usually get it fixed and shipped back to you by one of these well-trained businesses.

The most common damage that is seen in iPads tends to be a broken or cracked screen (which makes sense, since the iPad screen takes up pretty much the entire front of the unit). Luckily, the screen has little to actually do with the processing equipment on the inside of the computer, so it's a problem that can probably be fixed pretty easily.

In fact, there have already been cases of iPads that were so badly damaged that you would think they could never be repaired--and they were still made to look like new by an iPad repair company. Don't take it for granted that your equipment can't be repaired by a business that knows what it's doing and practices professionalism.

Because of their size and relative fragility, the iPad can be easily dropped, sat on, stepped on and a hundred other things that tend to break it. If this happens to you, don't go right out and buy a new one. Instead, look online for a trustworthy repair company.

Look online for more information on iPad repair and Arizona basement waterproofing.

Laptop Repair - A DIY Guide - Where to Start?

Solving problems and faults with a laptop is not as hard as you may think. Although technology and the world of computer repair may seem daunting to the newcomer, taking the time to read and understand this article will get you off to a good start. But where to start I hear you ask?

The first step in solving a problem or fault is to gather information. We will discuss the key benefit of writing down a description of the fault and when it occurs. This will help you in many ways, especially when trying to pin point an intermittent fault. You will have a physical record of what happens, how it happens, and the events surrounding when it happens. You can refer back to these notes and add to them as new facts come to light.

Having a clear description and all the facts will help you research the problem. Think of this stage as your investigation - do not skimp on your information gathering. Accurate information will always ensure an accurate fix. Just like a detective records notes at a crime scene, the information he or she records is key. Without good information, solving the crime and a conviction will not succeed. And likewise, without good information, you will not succeed with your diagnosis and repair.

If you are attempting to fix or repair a laptop for someone else, a family member, a co-worker, a friend; you will need to gain as much information surrounding the fault as possible. They are just like a witness at a crime scene. They have first hand knowledge of the events. Use a notepad and take notes whilst they show you the problem. Let them walk you through events, do not rush them or interrupt. Listen and observe whilst making notes. When finished, read back your notes and get their agreement you have all the facts, and the right facts.

It cannot be stressed enough how important the information gathering process is a key step in being able to accurately diagnose and repair laptop problems. With patience and practice you will soon become experienced in this vital step, and the once daunting task of where to start becomes much clearer!

Save Money With Used Or Refurbished Laptops

If money is tight for you right now but you still would like to get your very own laptop then you should know about the various inexpensive options that are available to you. The two best options for saving big on a laptop are used and refurbished models. In this article we will discuss these options so that you have the information you need to make the best purchasing decision.

Refurbished Laptops

Refurbished Laptops are your best bet for finding a high-quality laptop at a low price. What are refurbished laptops anyway? These are units that consumers have returned to the company because of some mechanical defect. The company then repairs it, repackages it, and resells it. The technicians that work on these units are skilled experts so the laptops end up being essentially as good as new. Some companies will even replace the outer casing so that the computer even looks new.

These laptops that have been refurbished are less expensive than their new counterparts (sometimes several hundred dollars cheaper). Some of the companies also provide a full warranty on their laptops so that they have the same coverage that their new models do. These laptops are generally just as reliable as new units and of all your choices for cheap laptops, these types are your best bets. You can find refurbished laptops on the websites of these top companies:

1. Dell
2. Lenovo
3. HP
4. Sony
5. Apple

Used Laptops

You can save more money with a used laptop but you will be taking a greater risk at ending up with a non-functioning unit. Most of the time when you purchase a used laptop you're going to get no warranty and no guarantee that the computer is operational. But if you are really in a pinch financially and you have to have a laptop then you can visit these sites to find used models:

1. eBay
2. Craigslist
3. Backpage
4. Your local classified ads

Here you will find people selling their own used laptops (and usually pretty cheaply). The only problem that you're going to have to worry about is the fact that there's really no guarantee about the condition of the computer. If you're on eBay buying a used laptop (and this really should be the only place you look) then check the seller's rating. If it's good then you should go ahead and buy but if it's low or non-existent you should reconsider. Also look at the picture of the product and make sure there are no signs of external damage (such as dents, scratches, or scrapes). Once again, you're not getting a guarantee so buyer beware!

iPad Cases Are Necessary to Keep Your New Investment Safe

If you've got an iPad, or are getting one in the near future, make sure you take the time to look at good quality iPad cases. The best iPad case is designed not only to help your iPad look its best, but to protect it knocks, drops and against keys and other items in your bag.

The iPad is extremely popular as a gadget that can be taken wherever you go. But with anything so portable, it puts it at risk of damage. Here is a quick explanation of the various vulnerabilities of this gadget:

Scratches: Even just leaving the iPad in a handbag next to your keys could leave you regretting not buying an iPad cover case.

Moisture: Some iPad cover/cases are designed to be waterproof and protect against any liquid that could come into contact with the gadget.

Dropping: Even the best quality iPad case can't stop you from dropping your iPad! But they can help to give an extra layer of protection to help keep the device working properly.

iPad Cover/ Case Choices

Transform Your Life With a Portable Color Printer

Portable color printers are a relatively new product, but buying one could change your professional life as well as your personal life for the better. I've often thought that some products such as Blackberry's and laptops were great improvements to people's lives. But then I realize that to an extent they were a time burning burden. People didn't have quiet moments of peace, but were always typing or texting away.

I believe a portable color printer changes this. Why?

A portable color printer is designed to save the individual time, and not use it up. It means that a businessman looking to print of an important contract no longer has to go back to the office to print them off. He can go back to his car and take out his portable color printer and get going right away. Sometimes he wouldn't even have to walk that far, because some portable printers can fit right into a person's pocket!

Imagine how much time would be saved, when people that would usually have to travel to a printer to print of the documents and then travel back, could just whip out to their car - or even pull it out of their bag. Imagine how much time would be saved for engineers, office workers, doctors and nurses when the appropriate paper-based materials could be printed of then and there. There's no going back to the office for the engineer to get hold of a printer. The office worker who had just finalized a deal at a cafe could print the negotiated documents then and there. The doctor or nurse who'd just visited a patient's house could print of the instructions or medical forms then and there.

It cuts out unnecessary travel time.

How Do I Find the Best Laptop For a Kid?

Buying laptops or computers for kids is much different than buying for yourself. Knowing what to look for and what they need is key.

First, it's helpful to answer these questions:

What programs do they need? Will they be using this for school? They'll need a word processing program, like Microsoft Word or Microsoft Works Word Processor. Microsoft Works usually comes with Windows by default; Microsoft Word comes with the purchase of the Microsoft Office suite. The suite includes Power Point and Excel, also programs kids may use with school. For a Mac, there's often a default word processing program, but the full deal can be purchased with Microsoft Office for Macs. Do they need internet? Some schools do offer filtered access to the Internet, and others may simply have wireless available. Laptops with wireless capabilities can be disabled so kids can't get online. Most laptops on the market today come with wireless features and ethernet ports for hooking up to the internet. How durable is it? Kids are more likely to lose or break laptops. Shuffling around from school to homeopens many opportunities for dropping or losing them. You may choose not to buy a laptop for kids that is highly expensive and brand new, and instead opt for a decent used one that will support necessary educational programs. Many vendors offer refurbished laptops with good warranties. If you do go for a more expensive new model, consider home insurance that might cover loss due to theft. Having a protective laptop case can also be a good plan. With these things in mind, you can walk into a store selling computers and have an idea of what to look for. You can also check online with retailer websites and view refurbished models to get some pricing.
